CWGA TEAM REPORT FOR 2007

A very special thank you to the host clubs this year and their professionals: Oakwood-Wink McLaughlin; Canterbury-Craig Murray; Hawthorne Valley-Mike Thirion; Westwood-John Sico; and Columbia Hills-Jim Wise. The caddie masters, club staff, member volunteers, CWGA representatives and especially the Team Captains were outstanding. All were responsible for another successful year of Team Play.

The focus this year was on the pace of play as presented by the USGA. Clocks were purchased and placed near the 4th, 9th, 13th and 18th greens to show players the time it took them to play 4 holes. The goal was to play 18-holes in 4.5 hours.  Clocks were monitored and records kept on time per foursome at the first team play. After that, individuals were expected to check the clocks and play accordingly. Most groups were on target. Four warnings for slow play were issued, but no one was put on the clock or lost points. Because of the Captains participation and support and better communication with the players on the course, the speed of play improved a little as did the overall time of play. If each player continues to focus on her own pace, we can improve each year.

Mayfield Sand Ridge took the lead early this year and never relinquished it even though Elyria and Country were close behind. After the third Team Play, Elyria claimed second, Country third and Lake Forest fourth. Although points were extremely close all season, those positions never changed. Westwood finished 5th, and Chagrin Valley moved from 11th to 6th to win the Most Improved Trophy.

Heartfelt thanks to Shaker and Hawthorne Valley for fielding teams each week from a small band of willing participants and to other teams who faced similar challenges. Thank you to everyone who played and participated; to all the Captains, to Marlyn Ornstein, Sherry Robinson, and Celine Krashin for being at each Team Play, and especially to my Assistant Team Managers, Diana George and Toby Siegel, for their time, planning, support and work at all the Team plays. It was truly a team effort.

Team Play position for the current year is determined by the previous year’s final standings. Ties between teams will also be determined by the previous year's position.

MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose of Team is to provide a competitive environment for each club’s best players.

                                                TEAM PLAY RULES

Five players will comprise a team; each of the 16 teams competing will meet each other once. There will be 5 rounds of play in foursomes. Match play will be used. Eighteen points will be available in each two-person contest (1 point for winning a hole, ½ point for tying, and 0 points for losing a hole). Consequently, one player in a foursome could conceivably win 54 points if she wins all the holes from each of her three opponent.

The winner will be the team with the highest number of points after all rounds have been played. The runner-up will be the team with the second highest total points. In case of a tie for the first and second places, five sudden death matches will be played that day. Play will be in twosomes by position, (#1 player team A vs. #1 player team B, #2 vs. #2 etc. through position 5) hole by hole to sudden death. The club pro will designate the starting tee. Play will continue until there is a winner in each of the five twosomes, and the tie is broken. Both the winner and runner-up will receive the designated traveling trophies.

There will only be one division.  In addition to the overall winner and runner-up, the third, fourth and fifth place teams will be recognized. Ties for those places will not be broken.  A permanent plaque will be awarded for third, fourth and fifth places. The most improved team, determined by its final standing with regard to the previous year standing, will also receive recognition.

A forfeit, whether it be one Team player or more, shall result in the opponentsreceiving 2/3 of the available points (12 points of a possible 18 points). Theremaining 1/3 or 6 points will fall into the unclaimed category.

Should two or more players in the same foursome refuse to play a portion of a round with the field, they cannot claim points for unplayed holes. Points in the match with one another for those holes will fall into the unclaimed category. A player arriving late will lose as many holes as her group has played at that time. Any player having to withdraw during the course of play will receive credit for the holes played and will default the balance.

In case of inclement weather, a minimum of nine holes must be completed by all team players to constitute a Team Play. Points will be awarded only for the holes played.

USGA RULES GOVERNING MATCH PLAY SHALL APPLY TO ALL MATCHES WITH TWO EXCEPTIONS:

1.      Upon reaching the green, all balls shall be marked, except the ball farthest from the cup. There will be no ball interfering with, or being of assistance to any other ball. All putts must be holed out.

 2.      A non-playing Captain will be not be permitted on the course to give advice during the course of the matches.

All players MUST report to the club where play is scheduled regardless of weather or playing conditions. The Team Captain will report immediately to the Team Manager and all players will remain until a decision has been made for postponement. The Team Manager will consult with the Club Officials regarding the delay or rescheduling play and advise Team Captains

All players must check in by

In order to allow for fair competition within a foursome, caddies and carts will be assigned based upon the established guidelines. Details of these guidelines will be given to each Captain.

Team Captains are requested to submit their line-ups and club membership numbers in WRITING to the Team Manager at least three days prior to the scheduled play.  Changes may be made prior to the day of play by calling the Team Manager. Any last minute changes occurring the morning of Team Play should be reported at the Check-in Table prior to Players on each team are to be seeded according to handicap index. If team members have the same index number, the differential must be used to determine position. Handicaps will be checked and approved before starting matches.

SPEED OF PLAY IS OF PRIME CONCERN. IF A MATCH FAILS TO KEEP PACE ON THE COURSE AND LOSES IN DISTANCE MORE THAN ONE CLEAR HOLE AHEAD, IT MUST ALLOW FOLLOWING MATCHES TO PLAY THROUGH! SLOW PLAYERS WILL BE PENALIZED.

THERE WILL BE A MANDATORY $15 PER PLAYER CHARGE FOR LUNCH AT EACH TEAM PLAY.
